NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Kestrel”) The Thames Jockey Club's spring meeting which will this season be held at Ellerslie* owing to the Parawai iirsc bi-ing under reconstructin will commence to-morrow and will !>■ concluded on Alonday. It would appear that as the acceptances i are very heavy racing in the Auckland I ovince has not made such a great contribution afte f all to the hopci Af < success of the C.J.C. Cup meeting at Riecarton, commencing to-morrow week. The Riccarton Trip Wanganui’s team for the big Riccarton racing carnival will be small but -rt this year. Civility and Kiosk,

both trained on the Wanganui tracks, will contest the Stewards’ Handicap, the big sprint event on th<- opening day while Keremoana, owned in this district but. trained- at Ilawera, will tflso be a contestant. In the New Zealand Derby, to be run on the second day of the meeting, Paleta will represent Mr J.

A. Todd, in whose colours the son of Leighton and Catalini has already achieved? “Classic” honours, and in the same event Laughing Prince wvill do bat.le for the Fordoil stable. Further honours should accrue as a result of the visit of the Wanganui contingent to Riccarton. Before Departing ; As Paleta and Kiosk leave by the early train this morning for Marton, where they will join riie AucklandWellington express on route to Riccarton, advantage was taken of the fine , weather yesterday morning to give the pair a winding-up gallop preparatory to their departure. A heavy fog enVeTopcd the course when Paleta and Star Area set off on a spin over six furlongs anti it was impossible to obtain any section-

ial times but t'he pair covered the dis- ' tance comfortably in imin 18 l-ssec., i Paleta going well within himself at the ! conclusion of the task. A little later with I conditions as far as visibility was concemoi no better. Civility (J. Head) and Kiosk (J. Barry) went four furlongs. which they covered in 49 2-ssec. The Elysian rnare had slight’/' the better of it when the post was reached and as she will probably have the services of R. Recd in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton she should give a good account of herself. Bright Glow and Gold Dawn At the Waverley meeting on Monday last a pleasing feature of the day’s racing was the success of two full sisters, Gold Dawn and Bright Glow. Both are by Day Comet from Red Dolly (All Rod Dolly), Gold Dawn being a three-year-old and Bright Glow a yeaT older. Though both sisters are ownt/1 by Mr H. Cleland they are trained in different stables. Gold Vawn. Who won the Alorton Memorial in comfortable fashion, is trained by W. F. Mantle at New Plymouth, and Bright Glow, who is in J. Fryer’s Hawera stable, won the Afoumahaki Stakes in equally easy style. More successes should come the way of Mr Cleland’s cherry and old gold livery. Levin Nominations Nominations for t'he Levin Racing Club’s annual meeting to be held' on Saturday, November 19, close at 9 o’clock to-night. Stipes’ diaiman A Palmerston North message states that Afr A. P. Wilson, Palmerston orth, has been appointed chairman of the Stipendiary Stewards of the Racing Conference, in succession to Air MeAlahon who left for Sydney last week. Unruly Lady Desmond It was stated at Waverley on Monday that al] was not well with Lady Desmond, who was scratched for the Waverley Cup, though she was a prime public fancy for the event. The probable reason for the action was the fact that her connections wore afraid she might exhibit some of her usual unruliness at the barrier and? rather than risk having her name placed on the schooling list, as was done .to Finelli, it was decided to decline the Labour Day engagement. Perhaps when the field lines up for the New Zealand Cup next Saturday week the daughter of Bronze will have improved in her manners at the starting barrier. With Reremoana, Lady Desmond left Hawera yesterday for Riccarton, breaking the journey at Palmerston North last night. Speedy Hacks Few better hacks have won at Trenthan Ti Tree and Duke Abbey, states “The Watcher.” and it makes cut Kedilar and Fee Simple to be above the average. Duke Abbey’s race was half a second faster than the open race won by Booster. Disposal of Horses L’his afternoon a team of horses, in training and in work, will be offered for sale, by Air E. I‘. Christensen at Waverley. Included in the number are Standard, Dukla, Cochineal, Lady Acre, and Opa, and the brood mare Oka (dam of First Acre and Opa). Stormy for South It is understood that Stormy is to be sent to Riccarton to be trained by F. D. Jones. He is a useful sort to exploit in the South Island. On Schooling List The secretary of the Racing Conference has notified F. E. Loomb, of Te Awamutu, that his. mare, Finelli, has Been placed on theschooling list as from October 15. This made the mare ineligible for the Waikato meeting. Not Inaptly Named Winalot did not win a race at the A.J.C. spring meeting but the estate of the Into Air H. Chisholm benefited ' io the extent of £2,200 as the result of seconds in the Derby and Craven Plate. Much-Improved Crown Area According to G. New, the trainer of Crown Arun, there is little really amiss with the Acre gelding and? it is quite on the cards that the much-improved sprinter will take his place in the Stewards’ Handicap field at Riceatron. Just Childsplay ChiVisplay, writes “Voder not an imposing looking juvenile her slow paces but she is a beautiful galloper who should hold her own throughout the season. Really she gave C. Emerson an armchair ride in the Wei-
