A RECTOR’S APPEAL

CONFESSIONAL ALLOWED REMOVAL OF 12 ARTICLES. Sir Lewis Dibdin, the Dean of the Court of Arches, recently delivered judgment in the appeal of the Rev. J. H. M. Robertson, rector of Capel St. Mary, near Ipswich, against a faculty granted by the chancellor of the diocese last November ordering the removal of certain articles and ornaments from the church. Sir Lewis confirmed the order of the chancellor in regard to 12 out of 18 articles, including the tabernacle over the altar used for the reservation of the Sacrament, an incense censer, stations of the cross, an additional altar with candlestocks and crucifix, an image of the Virgin Mary, and a holy water stoup. The Dean also upheld the chancellor’s order for the restoration of the lectern, which was removed by the rector to make way for the imago of the Virgin. The five items relating to which the chancellor’s order was reversed included books of devotion displayed on two tables in the church"; notices as to times for confessions; a confessional stool, and. notices asking for prayers for the dead. The dean directed that half of the costs of the appeal should be borne by Mr Robertson.
