HARBOUR WORKS

THE MONTH’S ACTIVITIES BEPOBTS BY OFFICEES Works carried out by the Wanganui Harbour Board during the last month, were reported on at the monthly meeting of that body on Friday. The engineer (Mr H. V. M. Haszard) reported as follows: “The raising of the South training wall was completed by the deposition of 120 tons of stone. The North training wall is now being proceeded with, 460 tons of stone being deposited above the Imlay Wharf and 560 tons below. “The bucket dredge was employed during the whole of the month in dredging silt from the berthages and from the swinging basin at Castlecliff. Boiler blowdown and washout occupied two 'days, during which time various minor repairs were effected to the dredge and Mascotte. Rough weather accounts for considerable delay at this time of the year as the old punts require very careful nursing. The output for the month was 846 punt loads or 11,844 cubic yards. The contractor has practically completed the Meuli wharf reclamation and grading except for a little trimming and work to be done with the grader which it is advisable to leave for a few months when the metal will have settled down and some wet parts will have a chance to dry out. “Work at the oil wharf is well advanced towards completion; only one 70 foot span (of which the trusses are built) remains to be ere-cted. This awaits the removal of the Power Board’s pumps which should be completed iu a few days.” The harbour master (Captain P. McIntyre) reported that from the end of the moles to the Castlecliff wharf the least depth of water in the navigable channel was equal to 23 feet 6 inches at h.w.o.s.t. and 20 feet 6 inches at h.w.n.t., or 15 feet 6 inches at 1.w.0.5.t. The least depth of water between the Castlecliff Wharf and Town Wharf was in Mitchell’s Reach and was equal to 13 feet at h.w.o.s.t. and JO feet at h.w.n.t.. The least depth of water at the gas wharf was equal to 14 feet at h.w.o.s.t. and 11 feet at h.w.n.t. The depth of water alongside the loading berth for sighters was equal to 12 feet 6 inches at h.w.o.s.t. and 9 feet 6 inches at h.w.n.t. . . The gross tonnage of vessel arriving during the montL. was 52,495 tons and departing 43,766 tons.
