LOCAL ACTIVITIES The following passed the examination at the conclusion of the recent first aid; class held at the Girls’ College: E. Anderson, A. Babbage, H. Barber, M. Brock, B. Butement, E. Cameron, T. Davison, E. Gaze, J. Gilchrist, D. Gray, E. Harris, I- Hodge, A. Howard, R. Lancaster, A. Naumann, A. Phillips, I. Rockel, M. Rowe, J. Saunders, D. Scown, M. Taylor, A. Waugh. A class in home nursing for ladies will commence on Wednesday week, August 24 at the new St. John Ambulance Hall, Cook’s Gardens, off Trafalgar Place. The secretary will attend* at the hall at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday next to enrol intending class members, or enrolment may be made by letter addressed to P.O- Box 404. Apart from the necessity of taking this course of instruction as an entrance to the St. John Ambulance Brigade, its practical value is beyond dispute. It is framed to give every woman that insight into the art of nursing which will enable her to detect the signs of illness, to take whatever steps may be practicable to combat it in its initial stages pending the arrival of a doctor and- to intelligently follow his directions for its treatment. By this knowledge it is often possible to prevent a simple illness developing symptoms of an alarming nature and the patient Is enablad to be nursed at home and- unnecessary suffering and anxiety is obviated. TOO FAT. It is good to be fat—not too fat—but comfortably well covered. Superficial fat in reason matters little. Do not worry about this—the real cause of trouble is the internal fat. Do not try and drive the fatty tissue in, for that is where the danger lies. The internal organs must be freed from superabundant fat.
