UNEMPLOYED RELIEF

BEARING THE BRUNT I I CITY COUNCIL’S LARGE STAFF A review of the unemployment relief work in the city was made by the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers) at the sacred concert in the Opera House last evening. Ho said that at trie preseht time there were 86 men employed by the City Council on nine district relief works, aai under this head? £2,137 had been spent up to August 6. There were 39 men on works being carried out under the unemployed relief loan of £6,000, operations in this department being divided into four separate works. Of the loan £2,053 had been spent. There were also 60 men employed on other loan works and 98 men on the maintenance staff, making a grand total of 290 men employed by the City Council.

All concerned in the production of “The Arcadians’ ’ by the Wanganui Amateur Operatic Society will give their services gratus for to-night’s 1 performance in view of the fact that the proceeds are in aid of the unemployment fund. Messrs J. C. Williamson Ltd'., have intimated that they will donate the amount of their royalty on the production for that evening (£lO 10s) and orchestra, stage hands, and attendants will give their services free. If is to bo hoped that the public will do their part by making the attendance a record one.
