’CHASING AT RICCARTON

GRAND NATIONAL MEETING Inferior Jumping by Steeplechasers Marks Concluding Day

The large number of falls in the steeplechase events at Riccarton was a marked feature of the concluding day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting. In the Lincoln Steeples five of the eight contestants were put out of the running through faulty jumping or through parting company with their pilot, while in the Aylesbury Steeples only three remained at the conclusion of the race. Tuki’s win in the Lincoln Steeplechase was the r efore a lucky one. Outstanding performers were Solferite. Royal Game and Aberfeldy.

THE C.J-C. MEETING YUKI'S LINCOLN STEEPLES HOYLAKE SPRINGS A SURPRISE. SOLFERITE WINS AGAIN. [ Special *' Chronicle ” Service. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting concluded to-day. The weather was fine but there had been heavy rain overnight and the course was heavy. For the day the totalisator handled £50,433 10s, against last year’s £58,365 10s. For the meeting th/; total was £156.502, last year’s total being £169,811 10s. Heads Between Three. Not© was again quickest to begin in the Longbeach Handicap and, cioseJy attended by Amorist, Royal Lineage and Wreath of Myrtle, led to the straight. A hundred yards from the post Royal Lineage collared Note and appeared to be winning but then Kalos, on the rails, and Hoylake, on the outaide, came with a great rush, Hoylake winning an exciting race by a head, with Kalos a head in front of Royal Lineage. Satrap was a neck away, fourth, with Note close up. Four of Seven. FalL From the start of the Aylesbury Steeples Royal Wink and Jovial at once took up the running with The Babe following. The nast-named fell at the Kennels double and Jovial, Greenstone and Royal Wink carried on round to the top turn and to the stand double, where Greenstone ran off. This left Jovial in front of Royal Wink, but at Cutts’ Hokici fell. Jovial then Jed the others until the second last fence, where he struck heavily and fell. Royal Wink was left with a commanding lead, finishing up the winner by six lengths. Good Form, the other to finish, was eight lengths away. Aberfeldy’s Hurdles. Rangatahi was the early leader in the Sydenham Hurdles, with Kaikahu

and Dubious next, and the order was the same past the stand, where Wharncliffe was tailed off. At Cutt’s Rangatahi, Kaikahu, Dubious and Perle de Leon was the order and there was little change until the six furlongs post was reached, where Aberfeldy made a forward move. Aberfeldy and Dubious led into the straight but Aberfeldy came away from the last hurdle to win by three lengths, Perle de Leon beating Dubious by half a length. Coastguard and Kaikahu were next to finish. The Top-Weight’s Win. In the Styx Hurdles Sunny Loch and Guncase jumped the first hurdle together but then Guncase rushed away to the front and led past Cutts’ and into the back stretch, but a bad jump Jost him a lot of ground. Pcneus raced to the front six furlongs from home and was never afterwards troubled, to win by six lengths from Gay Jim, who was a length in front of Guncase. Sunny Loch was fourth. Eight Start, Three Finish. In the Lincoln Steeplechase Kipling came down at Cutts’, the first fence, over which Charlatan and Kapuna led from Peter Maxwell, Tuki, Vice-Grand, Passin’ Through and Zircon. The order was the same crossing the sod wall and kennels double, and Charlatan and Kapuna led to the top of the straight, where Charlatan fell. At the stand Kapuna, Peter Maxwell, Passin’ Through, Tuki, Zircon and Vice-Grand was the order. Going down the back Passin’ Through drew level with Kapuna and the pair raced over the sod wall together, where Zircon came down. At the top of the straight Kapuna fell and when looking all over a winner, Passin’ Through fell at the last fence. This left Tuki with a good lead and he went on to win by ten lengths from Vice-Grand, who beat Peter Maxwell by four lengths. These were the only ones to finish. Royal Game Easily. Royal Game was actually first to move in the Heathcote Handicap with Royal Mint and Indian Sage next and Chickwheat last. Rounding the top turn Royal Game and Royal Mint were still in front, clear of Joy Bird. In the straight Indian Sage joined issue but Royal Game held his own to the post to win by three lengths. Chickwheat, Gold Mint, and Fairy Herald were next to finish.

Cornstalk’s Double Win. Martian Spoar, Grand National, Cornstalk and Rowley were the early leaders in the Redcliffe Handicap and the order was unchanged until the straight was entered. Here Grand National was in front and Cornstalk camo through. The last-named took the lead fifty yards from home and stayed there to win by haJf a length from Royal Head, who finished fast and beat Grand National by a head. Rowley and Fairy Tidings were next to finish. Winter Cup Winner Again. Nadarino was actually first away in the Selwyn Handicap but was supplanted by Birthmark who carried on round the top turn from Sagittarius, Nadarino and Solferitc.
