SOCCER

TRYING CONDITIONS CHARITY CUE COMPETITION SATURDAY’S MATCH IN MUD Owing to the sodden condition of Cook’s Gardens Soccer arrangements for Saturday were again upset. Only one game was played, Eastbrooke and Mills playing on No. 1 ground, Victoria Park which was in a sorry state and militated greatly against good play. The game had a sensational ending, both teams failing to score until the last minute when Eastbrooke were awarded a penalty and a goaf resulted, giving Eastbrooke a place in the final in rather an unconvincing manner. The Play Described. Opening exchanges slightly favoured Eastbrooke, McKechnie and Glover carrying play down on the left, resulting in Scott, the junior early

distinguishing himself by holding a long shot from Thomson. Play continued in Mills’ territory until Glover, senr., from a good position kicked wildly over the bar. Proudfoot and Jamieson gradually forced played towards Killeen’s end where Brown, from a pass by Cartwright, shot narrowly past the upright. Play now travelled from end to end Eastbrooke having more chances to score but strong defensive play by Scott and Proudfoot prevented a Mills’ downfall, the ’keeper earning applause by pulling down a hard drive from Thomson.

A foul for Mills transferred play within ’Brooke danger zone, Jamieson passing to Gilroy who let Hope away and the winger tested Killeen with a fast angular shot. Webster tackled and kicked with rare judgment and twice in succession dispossessed Hope at the critical moment.

Bolton received some nice passes from Jones but his crosses always seemed to land at the feet of the everready Proudfoot who averted danger on numerous occasions. An Even Tussle.

Mills’ defence gradually forced the ’Brooke forwards midfield but a strong punt down the right by May carried play again within Mills’ danger zone. Half-time, however, arrived with both teams pointless. On resuming Mills became aggressive, Jamieson and Davidson forcing matters, ending in Kerwin being presented with an opportunity but McMillan effected a smart clearance.

Play hovered around Killeen for a spell until Webster dashed out with the ball to transfer to Glover who crossed a likely ball but Proudfoot averted danger by heading clear. A slip forward by Clapham allowed Thomson to try 3 solo effort but hotly pressed by Jamieson the centre was forced to shoot weakly into Scott’s hands. Davidson and Jamieson had a creditable combined effort in which the latter cleverly tricked two opponents, only to find Webster again in the way.

Eastbrooke Defending. Mills held the whip hand but their attacks caused Killeen little anxiety, so well were Webster and McMillan defending. The ’Brooke had an occasional raid and from one of these the winning point was procured. Glover, on the left, was worming his way in on goal and with little immediate danger one of the Mills’ men brought him to earth in unorthodox fashion. The referee awarded a penalty and from the spot Thomson scored, Scott making a valiant effort to save the ball. Soon after time was called. Eastbrooke •• •• J Woollen Mills 0 Mr H. Ward was referee.
