REPORT BY ENGINEER ACTIVITIES OF THE MONTH. The following report on work carried out during the month was submitted bv the engineer (Mr R. R Dawson), to the Wanganui County Council, at it.monthly meeting:— Afangawhero Riding.—The Hapoko- j poko Bridge is being repaired whi< h J work will be completed within a few J days. 1 Slips have occurred on the Parajmra I Road the worst of which have been on the Lakes Hill wlk*re the traffic was suspended for a short time on several occasions. However road damage by way of slips has been light as compared with Inst winter. Repairs in conection with the river erosion at Kaimatera Road have been commenced and will be completed next month. ‘Road widening work has been commenced. The contractor for this work is making satisfactory progress. The new metal road which was laid this year to Ngamatea has been rather badly damaged by winter traffic which necessitates special attention by way of maintenance. There have been numerous small slips between Afangamahu and Ngamatea but none of a serious nature. The necessary repairs have been effected on the Ruratahi Bridge which leaves same in good order and should be effective for at least ten years. Purua Riding.—lt is proposed to scarify and reform the road surface from Reid’s Hill to Kauangaroa. This length of road is very much out of shape and most difficult to maintain under its present condition. The road surface on Sutherland’s Hill also requires attention and it is proposed to (lo this work in conjunction with the widening and generally improving the alignment of tie road on this section. Road widening and draining is being carried out on the No. 2 Line and the road generally is in fair repair with the exception of required metal on places where the road has been widened.

Kaitoke Riding.—The No. 1 Line is at present in good order. The two miles of new metalling work has been completed with the exception of approximately seven chains which will be completed within a few days. The alignment of this road is being improved by widening at the most dangerous corners. Improvement in this way has been effected between the four and five miles and similar improvements are being made near the Kaitoke Lakes road.

A light surface of shingle has been laid from Alarangai Hill to W’angaehu. This surface can be economically maintained by road grader and will serve the purpose of preserving the foundation metal intact until the permanent surface is laid. Light metal repairs are necessary on the Warrengate and Kaitoke roads which work will be put in hand at once.

Kaukatea Riding.—Afetal repairs of an urgent nature are being made on the Long Acre Road at present and it is proposed to further repair this road later in the year when the conditions for haulage is more suitable. Road protection work by way of willow planting has been done at an under slip on the No. 3 Line near tho 10 mile. It is proposed to commence widening several narrow places on. the Waikoupa and Long Acre Roads at an early dateUpper Wangaehu Riding. —The work in this riding for the past month has consisted of general surfacing and metal patching on the Upper Wangaehu Valley Road. The newly-metalled road is in good repair with the exception of one or two places where the road formation has subsided. ‘Willows will be planted in these places and also in other places to prevent similar damage. Aforikau Riding.—Tho building of the roadman’s cottage at Afatahiwi has been completed. It is reported that the tracks in this riding are open for traffic and the damage to date has been light as compared with previous winters.” ••• The report was adopted.
