WANGANUI CLUB THE CAPTAIN WINS THE CAPTAIN’S PRIZE. The sensation of the day at the Wani ganui Golf Club’s Belmont Links on Saturday was the 77 (3 under bogey) put up by Dr. W. G. Scannell (the Club Captain) on an eight handicap, which gave him a net 69 and the Captain’s Prize by a clear margin of 3 strokes. Despite the heavy showers and bitter southerly which set in about 2 o ’clock, some good scores were returned. In conjunction with tho Captain’s Prize competition the final qualifying round for the Championship was played. J. M. Hussey again topped the list with the two rounds of 76 and 79—155, one stroke under his last year’s score. Two players, R. L. McNiven and AV. C. Christie, tied for sixteenth place and will play off. Medal Competition. Tho day’s medal competition for the best net medal round was won in the A grade by AV. G. Scannell and in the B grade by E. Osboldstone. A Grade Medal.

APPERLEY WINS N.S.W. AMATEUR CHAMPION SMITH PUTS UP GREAT FIGHT Received June 19, 5.5 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) SYDNEY, June 19. The New South Wales golf championship was won by Appcrley who defeattyi Smith in the final, four up and three to play. As the previous winner in 1918, 1920 and 1922, Apperley had experience on his side against tho 23-year-old runnerup. He was two up on the first round but lost the two opening holes on resuming but won the next and gradually drew away. Both players drove consistently well, the putting being relatively good and comparatively even, but the winner excelled in his shots up to the green.
