A NEW DESIGN

SOUTH AFRICA’S FLAG CONTROVERSY AGAIN RAGING (A. & N.Z.) CAPE TOWN, June 18. The South African flag trouble is again acute. Owing to the failure of the Select Committee to arrive at an agreement on the design for the National Flag, the Government is now prepared to amend- the 3ill and have a referendum on the new design consisting of the flag brought to South Africa by Van Riebeeck in 1652, with a shield in the centre embodying the Union Jack and the Free State and. Transvaal Republican flags in their entirely, with four stars representing the tour provinces. The Union Jack will occupy the left hand- top corner of the shield. The proposal is rejecter! by the Opposition because it Is against their consistent policy that the Union Jack and Republican flags must be an integral part of the National Flag, and not put on a small badge. The country again faces an intensive campaign. The Government is still prepared to fly the Union jack officially on four days in the year, representing the Imperial connection.
