The weather was fine in the morning for the first round of match play in the New South Wales amateur golf championship, but two heavy showers uf rain fell u-uring the afternoon. Duncan anu Apperley had a battle royal. The New Zealander went out in 35 and was two up, but took three putts on the tenth green and from thence onwards his putting was weak. Apperley won the tenth, eleventh and sixteen m, but Duncan squared the match at the seventeenth only to lose the eighteenth. In the afternoon Duncan won the first but lost the third anu tourth. He was two -down at the ninth and though he won the tenth Apperley had the upper hand ana won three up and two to play. Horton's Easy Win Horton played against Thorn and won the third but Thorn squared the match at the fifth. Horton then won the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth and, maintaining his form, was five up at the conclusion of the morning round. In the afternoon he sparkled out in 36 and eventually won nine up and eight to play. He meets Russell, of A ictoria, to-morrow. Whitton played fine golf against McFarlane and the New Zealander was seven down at the conclusion of the morning round and gave up the match. A feature of the play was the defeat of the present champion, Morrison, by bturrock. Details of the day’s play are as follows: —- Whitton defeated McFarlane (refigned). K. Harrison defeated- Bettington, 4 and 3. Nigel Smith defeated Coonan 3 and Apperley defeated Duncan 3 and 2. Russell defeated Wines 6 and- 5. Horton defeated Thorn 9 and 8.
