EIGHT YEARS UNDER
GERMAN CRUISER MOLTKE SALVAGE OPERATIONS AT SCAPA FLOW. (A. and N.Z.) LONDON, June 1. One of the greatest salvage feats ever undertaken was successfully accomplished yesterday when the ex-Ger-man cruiser Moltke, of 23,000 tons, was raised after eight years’ immersion in 70 ft. of water in Scapa Flow. Throughout the previous night air compressors pumped 600 cubic feet of air a minute into the hull to float her, and ultimately her keel stood 30ft. over the surface. When the entanglements have been cut away the Moltke will be removed on her last journey to Cava Island, a quarter of a mile away, where she will be beached.
