THE SOVIET’S DILEMMA
Another Russian demand is the dispersal of all anti-Soviet societies in Poland and the expulsion of their members. Nothing said, be it noted, about any anti-Polish organisations I Let there be remembered also the fuss the Soviet made about the recent expulsion of its own anti-British organisation from London! Its view seems to be that anti-Soviet societies must be crushed in whatever country they appear, but that its own activities must be protected. But this “Heads, I win; tails, you lose” outlook is only another instance of the complete absence of common honesty or sense of fair dealing which characterises the tyranny of Moscow. While Poland has already, without waiting for an ultimatum, very properly preferred satisfaction and punishment of those concerned in the murder, she has also stated that she will do this in her own way. Being within her rights in this, it is not likely, therefore, that she will concede the other demands contained in the Soviet’s Note. The outcome, no one can predict at the present. Even the Soviet, desirous though it be of a world-revolution, would probably hesitate about launching another world-war in which it could have little chance. On the other hand, it could ill afford a rebuff just at present, as that would mean a complete collapse of the influence she has built up, particularly in Asia, by trickery and fraud during the past six or seven years. Much anxiety will probably prevail during the next few days -while the Soviet weighs up the chances.
