The steamer Persian Prince (5685 tons) cleared Wanganui on Saturday morning for Westport to bunker. She leaves there this week for Nauru Island to load a cargo of phosphates for Auckland and Wanganui. The freighter Tairoa (8000 tons), now in the Wanganui roadstead, should complete loading to-morrow, when she leaves for Lyttelton. Captain Christie commands the Tairoa. and with him are the following officers: Chief, Mr. P. Choules; second, Mr. J. Steele; third, Mr. J. Finn; chief engineer, Mr. D. Robertson; second, Mr. E. Seymour; third, Mr. J. Marge t son; fourth, Mr. T. Crandle; fifth, Mr. W. Wiseman; sixth, Mr. D. Ross; seventh, Mr. J. Doueherty; chief refrigerating engineer, Mr. H. Stephenson; second, Mr. D. Macfarlan; wireless ojierator, Mr. S. Sanders; chief steward. Mr. J. Russell. . The converted motor-ship Sawokia, sixth in the list of 12 conversions and the first vessel to be equipped with Busch-Sulzer engines, made a speed of 12.01 knots on trial. This is the best showing made thus far. It is believed that the ne?t step in the Dieselisation programme will include some of the 12,000tonners of the United States Shipping Board s laid-up fleet, of which there are seven or eight available. It is figured that by means of cer-‘ tain eliminations a higher horse-power can be obtained, so that a speed of 12 knots may be obtained with these large vessels, making it highly desirable for long voyage service. On May 28 the German motor ship Madgeburg arrived at Sydney from Continental ports.. She is the second German motor ship to visit Australia, the first being the N.D.L. vessel Konigsberg. This is the Magdeburg s second trip. On returning from her maiden trip to Australian ports she made a record run to Flushing (Antwerp), at which port she » arrived in 34 days from Melbourne, her speed averaging 14 knots. The vessel, which was specially built for the ARustralian trade, as were her sister ships, the Duisberg and the Rendsberg, is of 6128 tons (gross), and has u length of 465 ft, a width of 58ft, and a depth of 29ft. The Duisberg was recently completed, and is expected to enter the Australian trade shortly. The vessel is of 6529 tons, and is 458 ft in length, 68ft in breadth, and 29ft in depth. Another fgeature of the vessel of interest to shippers is the funnel maiKing. As a result of a decision of the German-Australia, N.D.L., Hamburg-Ameri-can, and Deptsch Kosmos lines to change their funnel colourings when those lines amalgamated. the Magdeburg has a buff funnel with red and white bands and a black top.
