A MAORI CHIEF
DEATH OF HONE TIKAO NEPHEW OF FAMOUS CHIEFTAIN [Per Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. The death occurred to-day of Hone Tikao, aged 77, chief of the Rapaki and Port Levy Maoris. He was a nephew of John Tikao, one of the chieftains who signed the Ngaitahu land transfer, by which nearly the whole of Canterbury was ceded to the British. Hono Tikao had the largest claim under the Ngaitahu land claims now being considered.
