TAYLORVILLE BANK
AN OFFICIAL INSPECTION STONE FROM KAIWHAIKI Mr F. W. Furkert’, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public AVorks Department, visited AVanganui on Saturday to inspect the Taylorville bank and the quarries at Kaiwhaiki. In company with the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers), Councillor C. H. Burnett (chairman of the AVorks Committee), Mr N. Crofton Stavcley (city engineer) and Mr H. V. M. Haszard (engineer to the Harbour Board), Mr Furkert motored to Kaiwhaiki and inspected the stone deposit at the Harbour Board’s quarry. The party returned to the city at noon, when Mr Furkert made an inspection of the Taylorville bank and went fully into the plans of the proposed work with Mr Stavcley. The result of Mr Furkert ”s Inspection will be made known to the City Council in an official report. In the meantime the Council has arranged for a diver to report on the extent of the erosion along the entire length of the bank. This work will be undertaken immediately, under the direction of Mr Haszard. Mr Furkert returned to AVellington tfie same day. The City Council has arranged for a temporary deposit of stone to be placed at the bridge approach, pending the work proceeding. The conference between the City Council and the Wanganui County Council with regard to the allocation of cost will take place in the course of a few days. In order to ascertain the lasting qualities of the shell rock as used in harbour works, the party, also accompanied by Mr A- G- Bignell, chairman of the Harbour Board visited Castle- i cliff, and made a thorough inspection of the material used in the moles. Some qualities of shell rock which were placed in position for river bank protection over 43 years ago, were inspected and were found to be solid, and still doing excellent service. Mr Furkert definitely expressed his satisfaction with the quarries, and considered that the shell rock obtainable there was quite suitable for the Taylorville bank protection works, and should be used in mixed sizes. The smaller sized blocks would have the value of making a solid compressed mass when placed in position. Mr Furkert also made several helpful suggestions as to stripping and handling the rock with a view to effecting economies at the quarries. In connection with the work at the Taylorville bank, Mr Furkert emphasised the necessity for extending the apron in order to prevent further damage, such as has been caused by the recent heavy floods.
