DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

THE NEW ASSISTANT ME. BELL’S CAREER. (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON, May 19. The new Assistant-Director of Education, Mr A. M. Bell, has had quite a long career of association with eductional matters since he joined the service 38 years ago, aztd he is considered to have gained intimate knowledge of the administrative and professional side of tho Department’s work before being appointed secretary of the Education Department twelve years ago. As a scholarship holder, Mr Bell at-, tended the Timaru High School, of which he was dux in. 1886. At Canterbury College he won a senior University scholarship in 1896, and followed this up in the following year by gaining his M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics. He had eleven years ’ experience as a teacher, and was appointed inspector at the age of 28. For over 13 years Mr Bell acted in the dual capacity of secretary and inspector to the South Canterbury Education Board. In March, 1913, he was selected for the position of joint secre'tary to the Southland Education Board and the Southland High Schools’ Board. He was transferred in 1915 to tho Department of Education as officer-in |-charge of inspection and examination, * a position in which he had a large share in the administrative work of the Department.
