EMPIRE AIRWAYS
CO-OPERATION ESSENTIAL HELP FROM THE COLONIES. Sir Samuel Hoare (Secretary of State for Air), speaking at the Crown Colonies Conference, emphasised that the assistance of the colonies was essential as the co-opera-tion of the Dominions would enable the building up of the Empire airways. He urged that delegates to consider closely the various uses of aeroplanes in addition to the carriage of mails and passengers, including defence and commercial developments. The Straits Settlements were showing an interest in aviation, and were starting the first Crown Colony Light Aeroplane Club. The conference should also consider whether it was possible to utilise Singapore as an air junction for the AngloIndian and Australian services.
