THE WHITE PLAGUE

SPAHLINGER S SERUM Committee of Investigation Not Enthusiastic SAYS VALUE HAS NOT BEEN PROVED. FBy Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.] Received May 20, 8 p.m. (A. and N.Z.) LONDON, May 19. The members of the medical committee attached to the King Edward VII. Welsh National Memorial Hospital have been to Geneva investigating the Spahlinger treatment. Their conclusion as to the results of the cases examined are on the whole disappointing. The remedies, they say, do not offer a certain cure for tuberculosis, and there is no conclusive evidence that their use materially alters the course of the disease. While it is evident that M. Spahlinger has shown much ability in devising apparatus for special branches of bacteriology, his secrecy renders it almost impossible to judge the value of the work. It is claimed that the achievements are far in advance of modem knowledge, but there is no adequate evidence in substantiation of these claims. Owing to technical or financial reasons all attempts to obtain- supplies of the Spahlinger preparation for test by competent authorities have failed. The committee considers that the application of public and other funds towards the Spallinger Institute cannot be recommended. By a publicity campaign on behalf of sufferers since the war £36,000 has been provided from British sources for the Spahlinger Institute. The committee considered the question of patenting remedies, and failed to discover adequate reason why this course should not be adopted if M. Spahlinger persists in keeping his formulae secret. Production must necessarily be limited, as only small amounts can be produced by M. Spahlinger, assisted by personally trained assistants. Under these circumstances there is no hope of giving the remedy to the world.
