A London message reports the death of Sergeant-Major Edwin Hughes, aged 96. He was the last survivor of the Light Brigade charge at Balaclava, in which his horse was shot under him.

Deceased was 53 years of age. Ho leaves a widow and family of six. He was deputy-superintendent of the Fire Brigade, president of the bowling club, and deputy-starter of the Westland Racing Club, and had held many other public positions.
