A NOVEL INVENTION

BICYCLE OF THE AIR. An inventor. Mr Jules E. Palmer, of Andover, who has devoted special research to the problem of enginelcss air machines, to be driven by the operator by the use of either of his hands or legs, is now preparing for full-scale trials with a man-carrying apparatus which he calls aflying-cycle. He said:— “Below a small, carefully streamlined gas-container I am suspending an aluminium, bicycle-like framework. On this I shall seat myself and the hydrogen in the gas bag will be sufficient to lift the weight of the. mechanism and myself. Handle-bars, like those of a cycle, 1 shall use for operating controlplanes; while by vigorous pedalling I shall revolve a specially designed airscrew at the front of the machine which, calculations show, should enable me to move at 25 miles an hour in still air.”
