ORION THE HUNTER

Orion is one of the most beautiful constellations of stars which light the heavens by night, and I am sure, children, that you will ba able to find him if you search well, and look carefully at the diagram. The old Greek legend telle us that Orion was a mighty hunter who, for displeasing the gods, was deprived of his sight, and condemned to travel toward the east, facing the rays of the rising sun till his sight was regained Orion recovered his sight, and did many mighty deeds. But while out hunting with Diana, the goddess of hunting, he unfortunately displeased her, so she shot him with her arrow, and he became a constellation shining for ever among the stars. Like an immense five of diamonds you will see him in the sky; the three smaller stars in the middle of the four great diamonds form his jewelled belt

“Orion the Hunter.”

from which hangs his sword, a filmy rope of stars; and his head consists of three little stars. Go out into an open space, and turn round slowly till you find Orion. He is higher, or lower, upright or slanting, according to the hour and the season, but once you have seen him you will never forget him, and he will be your friend for all time. Of Course! “Strange that with your liking for the fair sex you never married.” “Oh, I don’t know. A man may love flowers and not care to be a gardener.”
