TIMBER DEPRESSION
A SERIOUS POSITION MINISTER EXPRESSES SYMPATHY [Per Press Association.] TAUMARUNUI, May 19. At Manunui yesterday a deputation waited on the Minister of Public Woorks (the Hon. K. S .Williams) regarding the depression in the timber industry, seeking his support in a movement against foreign importations. The deputation stated that it was five months since the mill at Manunui worked full time. Married men, working five days a week, wore finding t hard to live on £3 13s. Mr R. W. Smith, M.P., said that four mills had closed recently within a seven miles radius and 45 employees, with 46 children, were affected. Th© industry was doomed unless American importations were stopped. The Minister expressed sfrmpathy with the workers and said where possible, money should bo spent in the country.
