MISSION WORK THE YEAR’S FINANCES [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 19. The balance sheet of the Melanesian Mission shows that receipts for the year ended March 31, were £34,532. The heaviest item of expenditure was £9467 for the upkeep of the steamer Southern Cross. Over £12,000 of th© income is received from England, over £l3OO from Australia. From £17,000 to £19,000 of the funds are annually expended in Auckland. The report states that it was generally agreed that the Southern Cross

should be sold and replaced by either a new vessel of similar capacity burning oil fuel ,or two smaller vessels, one working in the north and one in the south, stores, being shipped by trading steamers from Sydney to central points in the islands. The final decision would rest with those in the mission field at a conference early next year.
