EVASION OF TAXES HEAVY FINE IMPOSED [Per Press Association.} WELLINGTON, May 18. Having admitted falsification of his income tax return for the four year ended March last year. Moraee Jame: Tapp, a fellmongcr, of Blenheim, wa: to-dav lined a total of £2OO by Mr Page S.M. * Mr Tudhope, for the Crown, said th* amounts were small compared witl cases recently hoard, but the Depart ment wished it to be known that th< prosecutions were not confined to case: where there were big discrepancies For the period named the defendant re turned his income at £1502, whereas i was £5317. The tax payable on the in come returned was £l7 and on the tru< income £227. One of Hie objects of thi: prosecution was to discourage other: adopting similar tactics. Mr Tudhope stressed the powers o: the Department in regard to charging the tax evaded and a penal tax to cor rect any impression that the fines wen *he end of the matter in these cases.
