HOSPITAL WORKS

BOARD’S INTENTIONS ASKED FINANCE THE DTFFICULTT Several matters affecting the publie welfare were introduced by Afr W. J. Rogers at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board. Mr Rogers said he wished to bring before the Board the questions of the establishment of a convalescent home, and tubercular annex, and a bacteriological department. The chairman, Dr. Skerman, said that a proposed convalescent home had been been discussed some time ago, and it was simply a question of finance. To go in for such an undertaking they would have to ask the ratepayers to contribute a considerable sum of money, < and that being so, they had decided to wait until better time. A proposal to provide for a tubercular annex had been considered in conjunction with other hospitals in a certain area, and Dr. Valintine had suggested the area from New Plymouth to Wellington. However it was again a question of money. <4 We are all ii favour of these things,” said the chairman, “but it is a question of whethei the ratepayers will agree to it. The matter of the bacteriological department will be considered after the X-ray department is complete.” Mr Rogers also asked what the Board’s attitude was in regard to assisting persons in the matter of rent. He understood that the practice of the Board of assisting necessitous cases had been stopped. The chairman said that the practice had not been stopped. Only the previous day he had paid a man’s rent for three months. “I am glad to learn that,” said Mr Rogers. Afr T. H. Battle said the Board did not contract to pay rent due for any period prior to u person coming to the Board for relief.
