SWANKERS’ CLUB

Sir, —The secretary of the Swankers, in his letter appearing in this morning’s issue, endeavours to throw doubt upon my ability to make simple calculations regarding percentages. He has only exhibited what a lack of knowledge he himself has on the matter. The credit balance at the end of the year, even if it were ten thousand pounds, cannot come into a calculation of working expenses in proportion to the grants made. Afy argument being that the proportion of management expenses to the amount that is given in relieving distress is too high, I challenge the secretary to disprove my figures. The audited balance sheet shows that total grants were £259 13s Id and the general management expenses were £159 12s 3d. Therefore I repeat that general management expenses were 61.5 per cent, of the grants made. I have endeavoured to couch my criticism as inoffensively as possible, for the reason that I believed that the Swankers’ executive were actuated by the best intentions towards their less fortunate citizens. But the secretary has gone beyond the limits of good taste when he accuses me of distorting the position. 1 think, therefore, that the secretary, should withdraw that imputation against me. If he does not do 1 so, I will consider the advisability of referring the whole of the correspondence to the Friendly Societies Department for their consideration. BUSINESS MAN. May 18.
