WANGANUI DISTRICT MEMBERS HOLD MONTHLY MEETING The Wanganui Education Board met yesterday, there being present: Messrs W. A. Collins (chairman), D. W. Lowe, W. S. Woodroofe, A. J. Joblin, E. F. I Hemingway, W. Adams, and J. Aitken. The Education Department wrote (advising that although it would not discontinue allowances for conveyance of children on horseback which had already been granted, it would not allow any further grants. A further letter from the Department said that a £1 for £1 subsidy would be granted up to £l5 for libraries for iteachers. The Boand? decided to make a grant of £l5 in this direction. Mr Hemingway was appointed the Board’s representative to attend the New Zealand Technical Education Association’s conference. The Ractihi School committee asked that pupils be permitted to attend manual training classes at Ohakune. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary and the chief inspector. Work in Hand. The chairman’s report stated that the work in connection with the additions, shifting and remodelling of the Manunui School was now well under way. The extensions had been completed, and the western wing, comprising two large rooms, had . been shifted and swung round to give the classrooms a northerly aspect; new service and teachers’ rooms were now being erected.

For the ensuing month it was proposed to carry on with works in band, and to remodel one classroom, improve lighting, and to paint the exteriors of the primary school building, Technical School, teacher’s residence and outbuildings connected therewith at Taifa ape. Repairs wore to be earring to the following schools and residences: —Mangaonoho residence, Ruahine School, Rangiwahia residence, Kiwitea residence, Cheltenham residence.

The workshop continued busy in meeting the demands for new furniture necessary to equip new buildings, and additions. The workshop staff had been increased by one.

The buildings staff consisted of:— Four joiners, one storeman, 11 carpenters, four painters, one labourer, one motor driver, making a total of 22.
