AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

MUNICIPAL PICTURES A fort filled with dead men, and then the brief space between the appeal for volunteers to enter and his return, the commander of the relieving force found that the man from whose hand he had taken the confession to a theft of a jewel from Brandon Abbas, in England, was missing. Who stole the jewels? Who set the fort on fire? These and many more questions arc answered in the Paramount picture “Beau Gcste,” which shows at the Opera House to-night, to-morrow night, and again on Monday. When Herbert Brennon set out to make “Beau Gcste” he was presented with the difficulty of finding in the first place a desert stretch to look like the Sahara, and, secondly to build a fort there. In the desert wastes near to the Mexican borders in Arizona a burning dune-like area was found and then the herculean task of building a duplicate of the French Foreign Legion fort was tack- • led. The camp of extras, stars and technical experts numbered over 2,000 men and was run on semi-military lines. Timber and materials for the fort had to be run over a plank roadway sped- ( ally constructed and at the end of this down a long slope to waiting tractors which hauled it the final distance to the actual location. It is in and a round this fort that much of the mysterious and thrilling action of this great picture takes place.
