LONDON CABDRIVERS
MEETING OF VETERANS FASHIONS OF PAST DAYS. Eighty old men gathered for a merry tea party in the West End recently. They were the last of London’s old cab bies, the men who drove the “growlers” in the pro-taxicab era, and their average age was nearly 80. “Old Tom,’’ their senior, is 88. It was the winter “treat” given by the Cabdrivers’ Benevolent Association, at Maison Lyons, Shaftesbury Avenue West, to its pensioners and candidates for pensions. Some of the guests wore their toppers. ” They dressed in the fashions of the past, but their hearts were young, and they gave “Old Tom” a rousing reception)when he got, up ‘to speak.
