RIDGWAY STREET

EXTENSION SCHEME City Council to Provide Work for Unemployed OVERHEAD RAILWAY BRIDGE The Wanganui City Council agreed last evening to the proposed extension of Ridgway Street which has been a subject of discussion for so long, anil work will be put in hand shortly. The Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers) said, unemployment was a solemn matter and it was the duty of the Council to assist citizens who were suffering from it. If the Ridgway Street extension were gone on with this would provide some relief. He moved that the building of the overhead railway bridge be gone on with. Councillor C. H. Burnett was not in favour of carrying out any project simply to give work for unemployed unless it would be of some use to the city. This work was important to the city and would open up reserves and provide a railroad siding for the Council’s yard. The overhead bridge would radjucc the danger at the Taupo Quay and Guyton Street extensions, said Cr. A. H. Bogers, and this was a very favourable point. Cr. H. G. Horsley said the Councillors were allowing partisanship to run away with better judgment. He moved an that the matter bo referred back to the works committee to ascertain the cost of the work. The city engineer (Mr N. Crofton Staveley) said the cost of the bridge had been estimated at £3OOO, and with the proposed oblique building would cost a little more. The Council was going on in a reckless manner, said Cr. A. E. Halligan. He moved, a further amendment that the bridge be not proceeded with at the time, and that other work be found for unemployed. This amendment was lost, as was Councillor Horsley’s. The motion was carried, councillors ' Horsley, Halligan, Werry, Morrison,. : Siddells, ami Calyer dissenting. ;
