GENERAL OBSERVATIONS. A RUGBY COMMENTARY. Steel in Christchurch. Jack Steel, the West Coast and All Black wing-threequarter, has arrived in Christchurch from tlic Coast. He will be playing far Albion, but not for some time yet; it is believed that he will not don togs until the end of the first round of tho competition. Nepia, Player-Selector.

George Nepia, New Zealand’s great full-back, will not be playing for Hawke’s Bay this year. Nepia is now playing at a place called Rangitukia, in the East Coast back country, and he, has been appointed sole selector for the Waiapu sub-union. Hawke’s Bay will miss Nepia in their Shield matches. He may, of course, return to his home at Nuhaka, but at the moment it looks as if Norman McKeenzie will have to another full-back. The French’ Way.

There has recently been an unprecedented number of serious accidents both in Rugby and in Association football matches in France, and one of these has resulted in the death of the wellknown player, Riviere. In another case a player named Fauconnicr, who was seriously hurt by an Amiens man, Miannay, in an Association football match, instead of appealing to the French Football Federation, took judicial proceedings against Miannay. Several legal experts were heard by the Court, which finally found that, as it was impossible to establish whether a blow received on the football field was wilfully given or not, the defendant must be acquitted. Paewal Undecided.

The Auckland climate appears to be exorcising a subtle fascination over Hawke’s Bay Maori players, for L. Paewai, besides Barclay, has been thinking of settling there. A native of Dannevirko, Faewai is a member of a wealthy Hawke’s Bay family, and can afford to be independent in his movements. Ho first came into prominence in 1923, when he was chosen to tour with the 1923 Maori team, which was involved in the On game railway disaster on its return from Australia. A fine type of player, only inferior to Nepia because he is more mercurial in his methods. Paewai would be a welcome acquisition to Auckland Rugby.
