THE MAYORAL ELECTION
Sir, —As a supporter of the Labour Party for some years, I desire to record my protest against the individualistic outlook expressed by Mr Rogers when returning thanks on Wednesday night. He is reported as having referred to the occasion as being “on® of the proud moments of his life.” As Mr Rogers is the nominee of the labour movement, would he not have shown the correct spirit by referring to his election as a victory for the workers and as being significant of the changing ideas of the people? A decade ago, the nomination ’ of a Labour candidate for the Mayoral chair would have been looked upon by many of Mr Rogers’ present supporters as presumption on the part of the Labour Party.
Furthermore, touching on his personal history, Mr Rogers informed his audience that he bad arrived in Wanganui “a common fireman.” Why “common?” Surely a decent, well-conducted fireman is just as deserving of public respect as a person in any other calling, but Afr Rogers’ attitude is one of seeming contempt. To wear the robes of office, dignity is certainly essential, but a proletarian vision can still be maintained. “CANDOUR.” Raetihi, April 28. /
