“NIPPY READING”

THOSE AMERICAN TOURISTS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TROUBLED Messrs Raymond, Whitcombo and Company’s decision that they will no longer shepherd American tourists to New Zealand appears to have troubled the minds of some members of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. At last evening’s meeting the president (Mr J. Coull) called the attention of the meeting to the resentment shown by some of the tourists to the remarks of some New Zealand newspapers. He did not know whether these remarks referred to the Press of Wanganui. Air Harris: It didn’t say Wanganui. Air Coull: It didn’t say Wanganui, but wc who live here know that one, if not both, of our newspapers made injudicious reference to the tourists. Wc are a body who have done a great deal to capture this traffic, and it’s pretty bad if such remarks are made just for the sake of a bit of “nippy” reading. Air J. Morrison. It’s a very foolish thing. “Some of the remarks were made at this table, were they not!” asked Mr S. E. Read.

“At the time;” replied Air Coull;” “but anyone who knows an American tourist, particularly one who has lived in the United States knows that he is the freest spender in the world. It’s a libel on him to suggest meanness or niggardliness.’* The president asked whether members wished that the Press be asked to note the Chamber’s view. Air TV. Brown: It is rather strange to lecture them and then to ask them ito note that they have been lectured. “No one recognises the value of the Press more than I do,” said Air Coull, “but newspapers are not infallible. They sometimes do unwise things. ’ ’ A member suggested that a deputation be appointed to interview the representatives of the newspapers in Wanganui. Air Brown: Would it not be better to let the matter drop! And on this they agreed.
