NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Kestrel.”) Fixtures to claim attention this week are the concluding day of the Waikato R.C. meeting to-morrow, the Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough meetings on Friday and Saturday and the Amberley annual meeting on Saturday. Wanganui Winter Nominations. The nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Winter meeting, which is to be held on May 19 and 21, are quite as good as could be expected and a*very successful fixture should eventuate. Handicaps will be issued about Monday next. Civility for the Connolly. That game little piece of horse flesh, Civility, will, it is expected, be seen out again at Wanganui at the winter fixture when she will take her place in the Connolly Handicap field. Her bold bld for the Prince of Wales’ Handicap at Awapuni last Thursday with 9.5, giving 271 b. to the eventual winner, siamps her as being about the best handicap equine of her sex in the Dominion for many years, and a win in the Connolly Handicap would be a fitting wind-up to her six-year-old career. Mandane Disappoints. A disappointment at the Manawatu meeting on Thursday and Saturday was the Fordell trained but Palmerstonowned Manriane, who was not sighted on the opening day, but was backed again on Saturday. AVell back in the early stages the daughter of Panmure and Cherry Mart did not come into the picture until the field swung round the bend for home. From this point she appeared to have a chance, but in the final stages would not respond and third was the best she could do, a length and a-half behind the dividend payers. The Twice-Sold Cimabue.

Cimabue has been well in the public eye of late. He was turned down by Mr T. A. Duncan because of not passing the veterinary surgeon’s examination, but this week his sale was completed to a client of an Auckland firm. The money was paid over and all documents signed, but when the now owner’s represntative went to take delivery of the horse, H. N eagle, his trainer, refused to hand him over. Later Neagle announced that he had bought Cimabue himself. As the sale to the Northerner was ma/lo first it would appear as if it will have to be recognised, but at present Cimabue standr as sold to two men. Stipendiary Stewards. Much more serious matters than the interference with Waieullus by Town Bird, at Awapuni on Thursday, are allowed to pass without notice. The majority of keen observers failed to notice any untoward incident, and, while not doubting that the stewards were justified in their action on the evidence before them, it can be said that the connections and backers 6f Town Bird were unlucky, for he always held the upper hand with Waieullus, and won absolutely on his merits. In bringing such incidents before committees and allowing much more glaring matters to pass, the stipendiary stewards are straining at a gnat anjd swallowing a camel. In the Prince of Wales Handicap there was dangerous interference going out of the straight, Phantasy being nearly knocked over, but no action was taken. Sport and “Sportsmen” Many people were astounded when the news got about that the judge’s placings in the opening event at Awapuni on Thursday had been reversed, states “Vedette.” In point of fact the officials themselves saw nothing to take exception to .ami the first indication of trouble was when R. E. Manson, rider of Waieullus, lodged an objecton against Town Bird. In the evidence it was adduced that Town Bird is a bad-mouthed horse, and his rider, C. Davies, stated that he was unable to hold him out, and if Davies had applied any pressure the horse would have gone in sooner. As Town Bird held Waieullus comfortably until the last few strides, his rider did not move on him but just at the last the horse was asked for an effort aid then the squeeze took place. There is not much doubt that Town Bird would have won anyway, and the connections of the horse freely admitted his hanging-in. A protest under the circumstances did i not appear a very sporting action, but 1 then there is little sport left in racing i nowadays—it is simply a business of ! pounds shillings and pence. “Sport” and “sportsmen” are two words almost without exeption quite out of 1 place when used in reference to racing. Some of the individuals carelessly alluded to by some writers as “sportsmen” are enough to make the prover-, bial cat laugh. Sir Fisher’s Trainer Passes The death occurred early on Thurs-; day morning of Michael, second son of : Mr and Mrs .1- Hurley, of Palmerston North, aged 34 years. Born in Palmerston North in 1893, the late Mr Hurley received his early education at the Palmerston North Convent School and later at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. On completing his education he assisted his father in business. Of a gonial disposition, his passing is mourned by a large circle of friends. The funeral, which took place yesterday, was largely attended. The late Mr Hurley was associated with the many successes of the racehorses Sir Fisher and Demost, having acted as private Irainer to his father for a number of rears. > =- ■
