SOUTHLAND BEACH RACES A SPLENDID TRACK [Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, May 1. The first beach motor races in Southland were held on Oreti Beach on Saturday. Splendid weather conditions were experienced and. a crowd of over 3000 was present. It was the unanimous opinion of visiting drivers that the beach is by far the best and safest in New Zealand. Speeds of over 90 miles an hour were attained by both cars and cycles. Results:— Motor Cycle Events Waimatuku Handicap (3 miles): L H. Johnston (A.J.S.) 1, D. Roberts (Harley) 2. Time 3.55. Invercargill Handicap (6 miles), L. Johnston (A.J.SJ 1, J. Gordon (A.J.S.) 2. Time 7.40. Pacific Handicap (21 miles) L H. \Tohnston (A.J.S.) 1, H. White (A.J.S.) 2, C. Rhodes (Indian) 3. Johnston won at 81 miles an hour and exceeded 91 miles at other stages of the race. Time 24.20. Motor Car Events Gladstone Handicap: D. Baird (Chrysler) 1, J. Butler (Chrysler) 2, A. Maider (Chrysler) 3. Time 11.12. Southland Championship, R. D. Wraight (Chrysler) 1, A. Maider (Chrysler) 2. Wraight covered one lap (3 miles) in 2min 25 l-ssec.
