OTAIHAPE LITERARY CIRCLE. [ From the " Chronicle’, ” HpeciU Correspondent. ] The Literary Circle met on Friday '■ evening, Mr. G. King presiding. ! The evening opened the reading of “Hamlet.” This is the most difficult play reading members have yet tackled, ; and they rose to the occasion well. Mr. 1 D. Kelly (Hamlet; Miss McKelvey (Ophelia); Miss McCormick (Laertes) and Mrs. Hird (Gertrude)), acquitted themselves most ably, while a newI comer in the circle, Mrs. G. Niven, as Polonius, gave a fine interpretation. Other parts were as follows: Fortinbras, ! Mrs. Upchurch; Horatio, Mr. G. King; Voltimana. H. Truman; Rosencrantz, Miss Smart; Guildenstern, Miss Long; Claudius, Mr. C. Perry; Bernardo, Mr. C. Joblin; Marcellus, Mr. C. Perry; Francisco, Mrs. Upchurch. The readi ing proved most enjoyable, and was well ; received, and there can be no doubt • that the public reading of Shakespeare ; has a definite educational value. A feature of the evening, although the > weather was bitterly cold, was the large number of ladies present. SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL. For Saturday’s Rugby the grounds were in splendid order and large crowds (were present. Some very promising play was shown, specially by Bellis, (Hautapu), Harrington (Pirates) and ! Riley (Old Boys). The Pirates-Old Boys match was a | good game throughout, and resulted 6—3 in favour of Pirates. Harrington was the outstanding player for Pirates, ; and Sinclair, Riley and Collier were the best of the Old Boys There were many infringements for offside play. Leahy had seven kicks, but secured only one. Harrington scored a splendid try in the first half. Purson, Pirates’ full-back, had a kick on the forehead and retired. W. Collier scored a good try for Old • Boys. Mr. Tuke was referee. In the junior game Hautapu 15 beat Railway nil. Mr. Furber was referee. Hautapu had it all their own way. Mangaweka (16) beat Old Boys (3). ■ This was also a junior game. Mr. Brogden was referee. The senior match, Hautapu (19 v. Huia (8) showed Bellis back to his old form, also McDonell. playing for Hau- . tapu. Rotherham scored a great try I for Huia, the veteran 11: ' hase converting. Hautapu had ng team. Utiku juniors (6) : rates (3) at Utiku after a hard g GENERAL At the annual meeting of the Utiku Gymnasium Club on Thursday evening, the following officers were elected: Patron, Mr H. A. Belk; president, Mr J. Hyndjes; secretary, Mr C. H. Fransome; treasurer, Mr J. Gilchrist; committee, Messrs C. Fransom, C. Clark, S. Riley, W. Thurston, W. Foley, J. Gilchrist, Geo. Gibbs. Mi- Clark was I thanked for having acted as instructor i during the past year and he agreed to i carry on for another year. A hearty vote of thanks was also passed to Mr ■: Craig for the use of the hall. The fire brigade received a call at 11 a.m. on Satundpy, but it proved nothing more serious than a chimney ablaze at the private hospital in Huia 1 Street. SOCIAL GATHERINGS Very few people took the trip to Tiriraukawa on Friday night owing to the weather. Mr W. S. Glenn, M.P., however, arrived in Taihape during the day and went out to open officially the new hall there. A large number of the local residents turned up ana I dancing was indulged in until the early hours.

At a social evening given in the Parish Hall by the Y.M. Hockey Club. Mr R. Wilson was presented with a gold-mountftd* fountain pen by the president, on behalf of the members of the club. Mr Wilson suitably replied. The evening was pleasantly passed m dancing, intersperscyl with musical Items. The members of the Taihape Literary Society met on Friday evening, when Mr G. King presided. A reading of “Hamlet” had been decideti* on and the principal parts were taken by Mr Kelly, 8.A., as “Hamlet,” Mr G. King, as “Horatio,” Mr Perry, as il Claudius,” -and Mrs W. E. Hird as “the Queen.” The parts wer»- particularly well rendered and the reading was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The euchre party held uniter the auspices of the Ohutu Social Club resulted in the prizes being won as follows: — Ladies. Mrs Foote; men, Mr D. Kennedy. The prizes were donated by the club. Despite the rough night, there was a large attendance. CYCLE RACE The amateur cycle’ race held on Saturday afternoon resulted as follows: Rehia. 1; McCullan, 2; Treadwell, 3. Ben fell. 4. The rain overnight made some of the course very heavy and it was altered; to the bottom of Mataroa Hill and back. The starters were Gibson, Rehia, Benfell, McCullum, Treadwell, and Anderson.
