MAORI CHAMPIONSHIP JONES BEATS POTAE The final of the New Zealand Maori men’s singles tennis championship was fought out on the Wanganui East courts during the week-end between P. Jones of Wanganui, and D. Potae, of Kaiwhaiki. Victory fell to the lot of Jones in the fourth set the scores being 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Jones, who was also the winner of the same match played at Rotorua last year is therefore the holder of the solid silver Ayres Cup which is valued at about £7O, and which can be won outright in three consecutive years. In Jones’ case, however, it has not yet been finally decided whether his win of last year is to count as the Ayres Cup was substituted for another trophy since the Rotorua tournament. Jones, who forced the pace, took the first two sets fairly easily, but in the third I’otae got a break on him of four games. Potae played steadily throughout and by putting up short stuff drew Jones up to the net and then attempted to pass him down the side lines. Jones played a good deal to Potae’s back-hand, and the latter, who got back many seemingly impossible shots, tried to play his usual lobbing game. Jones, on the other hand, did not allow these tactics to unsettle his play aud he was successful in killing many of Potae’s lobbing shots.
