SWANKERS’ CLUB

PUBLIC MEETING FOR APPEAL DAY A public meeting was held on Saturday evening to make arrangements for a big Swankers’ Club annual appeal to be made on Friday. May 20, for funds to carry on the work of alleviating distress in the community,

Mr F. Cunningham, who presided, prefaced his remarks by thanking those members of the public who were present for coming forward to assist in such a worthy cause. He stated that it was gratifying to observe that the club still retained the confidence of the public of Wanganui, as from present indications it was obvious that it would receive many calls for assistance during the coming winter. The City Council had granted May 20 as the Swankers* annual appeal day, and the business of the meeting was for the purpose of appointing sub-committees to organise the various activities. Captain D. Bonner remarked that it was noteworthy that the club could always rely on solid support from the farming community. Mrs F. Cunningham reported that she had gathered together a splendid band of workers whose services would be utilised in making a thorough can/ass of the city and suburbs and also 'to manage the various stalls. Mrs Cunningham also mentioned that she would be glad to hear from any other j ladies who arc willing to assist. The produce and meat stalls would i again be a big feature and already the | club has received numerous offers of j meat and produce from their country I friends. j Another feature of the day will he I the jumble stall, and an appeal is made ! to the public for clothing and anything saleable for this stall. Negotiations are in progress to procure suitable premises for the ifljay and the location will be advertised later. It was reported that the settlers of Kakatahi had arranged a ball to take place at Kakatahi on Saturday, May 14, the proceeds of which will be handed to the club towards the appeal fund. It is hoped that invitation holders will endeavour to journey out to Kakatahi to attend this function, which promises to be a huge success. The public are asked to watch the Press for appeal day annoncements from now on, as the various committees intend to commence their organising activities immediately. All enquiries, offers of assistance, etc., will be gladly received at the secretary’s office, 90 Ridgway Street, ’phono 3557.
