THE TURF

RACING AT AWAPUNI MANAWATU MEETING OPENS Commendation's Awapuni Gold Cup Win—Rapine and Piuthair fill Places—Thaw Downs Gascony—Black Mini and Crown Area Win the Double. (By “Kestrel.”) In fine but cold weather the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting was opened at Awapuni yesterday. Owing to the fixture commencing on a Thursday this year, instead of on a Wednesday, the half-holiday in Palmerston North, the attendance was adversely affected and the totalisator showed a large decrease of £13,676, the sum of £20.253 being handled, as compared with £33,929 last year. The fact • hat there were two tour-horse fields was also a factor in affecting the turnover. The coarse was in good order, though a trifle holding after the heavy rain, and the lawn and surroundings were a picture. The feature of the day’s raring was the appearance of Commendation m the Awapuni Gold Cup, in which the leading three-year-old met and defeated Rapine, PiAthair and Royal Divorce in a spirited contest. In the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes Mr Lowry’s crack two-year-old Gascony had to strike his colours to the Wanganui owned and trained Thaw, indeed a surprising result. Ln the two principal handicaps outsiders prevailed, but the fact that four favorites pail dividends was some compensation to investors. A deserpition of the days racing and full details of the results follow: Town Bird Unlucky. Tourteen faced the starter in the Woodhey Handicap, and Town Bird, Waieullus and Orazone were the only ones backed. £ll6 separating the trio in that order. At the barrier rise Berinthia, on the outer, was quickest to begin and led out from Thomond, Waieullus. Vast Acre and Town Bird. At the half mile Vast Acre and Waicullus were in front and they led into the straight from Berinthia, Thomond, Town Bird and Royal Plight. Town Bird came through fast when they straightened up and, with Waieullus, made for the judge well dear. The favourite appeared to crowd Waieullus a little at the distance, and won by a head, with Manly two lengths away, followed by Orazone, Vast Acre and Alon Alinu Au inquiry was held after the race into the boring incident and the stewards reversed the major awarding Waieullus first place and Town Bird second.

San Pedro Downs the Favourite. The bracket. Brigadier Bill and Omahu, was the favourite, selection in the Karere Hurdles, and it appeared as if backers of the favourites were anlucky to lose part of their investment. Bonny Kill was early in the lead from Brigadier Bill. Rangisarto, Hallowmorn. Hot tana. Ardath, Vexatious and Rehutai, this being the order as they passed the stands. Brigadier Bill and Hallowmorn alternately held the lead down the back and at the turn for home, and it seemed as if the former would have it on his own in the run to the judge. San Pedro came up with a fine run, however, and, going on. won by a length and a half, with Ardath two lengths away, followed by Hallowmorn. Kalakaua, Vexatious and Matu. Black Mint Surprises. A large field of twenty one fared the starter in the Prince of Wales Handicap. Alandane carried £485, True Blood £-304. Star Area £291. and Civility £289, but a big surprise was in store for investors. Civility drew the extreme outside but started closer in to the rails. With Royal Diadem, Yoma, and Scotch Mixture, Civility was slow to move and as they ran out of the straight Star Area, First Acre. Rouex. Phantasy, Buoyant and Clarinda was the order Pen pus was in front going down the back stretch, followed by Rouex, First Acre, True Bloud. Vivo. Star Area. Buoyant, Clarinda. Novar. Round the bend and into the straight True Blood was the leader, and Rouex. Peneus, Civility, Vivo, Novar and Captain Gazeley were next. Civility shot through and took the lead at the distance only to be caught on the poet by the iast-finbshing Black' Mint, who won by a head. Yoma put in a great run to get third, with Ver-1 tigern, Novar, Kilceit. True Blood, 1 Vivo and Pencils next in that order. Cohesion Wins Easily. Cohesion was seized upon as a good ihing for the Te Alatai Handicap, but. was at a good price, a lot of monev coming for Catcall, Gardant and Kiimiss. Lin Arlington, Gordon Swift, Gardant. Mandarine and Addlepate was the order out of the straight, and Addlepate led Lin Arlington, Mandarine, Gardant and Cohesion down the back. Turning for home Catcall was in the van. followed by Addlepate, Gardant, Lin Arlington. Gordon Swift. Koauau, and Cohesion. Cohesion was clear a furlong from home and, though challenged by Koauau. held him off to. win by two lengths. Capitulation was half a length away, and Catcall, Inoe, Gardant and Lin Arlington followed in that order.

Thaw’s Sines’ Produce Stakes. Only a quartette paraded for the Sires’ Produce Stakes, the GasconyGreat Charter bracket carrying nearly two-thirds of the investments. Gascony wa? quickest to begin from Thaw, Great Charter and Damaris, but Thaw dropped back to last as they reached the first furlong. Out of the back stretch the order was Gascony, Great Charter. Damaris and Thaw, and as they rounded the bend Great Charter ran a trifle wide, giving Damaris a chance to come up between him and Gascony while Thaw was forced to make his run on the outer. This he did with great gamencss and stuck it out to the end, beating Gascony by a short head. Damaris was two and a-half length? away and Great Charter alongside the filly. The first furlong was run in 13 1-5 sec., the quarter in 25 l-ssec., and the three furlongs in 37sec., the full distance taking 1.27 1-5. Great Gold Cup Finish. A great quartette faced the starter for the Awapuni Gold Cup, though Royal Divorce was outclassed. Commendation carried over four figures in a pool of £1751. As they passed the stands* Royal Divorce was up level with Commendation, followed by Rapine and Piuthair, but Royal Divorce assumed the lead into the back stretch. Commendation led round the turn for home two lengths ahead of Pinthair and Rapine, with Royal Divorce a length away. The leading trio were all hard at it over the last furlong and Commendation got to the judge first by a bare length ahead of Rapine, who was only a head in front of Piuthair. Royal Divorce was seven lengths away, well beaten. The first quarter was run in 27sec., the five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, and the six in 1.17 3-5. the full distance taking 2.8 2-5. This is the slowest recorded since Marqueteur won in 1922.

Local Horse Wins Sprint. Lady Cavendish was the elect of backers in the Telegraph Handicap, carrying £893, and there was a big drop to Benzora (£368), who was second favourite Crown Area got cut out at ihe rise of the barrier and Licinius, Lady Cavendish. Tukia, Benzora, Gaillard and Mireusonta was the early order. Benzora look the lead as they ran out of the bark stretch followed by Lady Cavendish. Tukia and Licinius. and turned for home ahead of Licinius. Plain Sailing, Tukia and Crown Area, 'rhe last-named, wide out on the turn, put in a great dash over the concluding stages and got up to win by a neck from Licinius, who was a head in front of Benzora, with Gaillard a head a wav. Tukia. Mireusonta. Miss Hupana. Good Sport and Bevis wore next. The winner covered a lot more ground than anything else and put up a very creditable performance. Favourite Takes the Last. In the concluding event R. Reed had tlie mount on Hathor and the daughter of Egypt and All’s Well carried £568, which was £42 more than the second favourite, Partaga, but both were at good prices in a large pool. Kalos and Popoff were the first to show out, followed by Partaga. Hathor. Henna, and Break o’ Day. At the half-mile the favourite had taken the lead from Kalos. Partaga. Henna, Superb King, Popoff and Break o’ Day. and this order was maintained into the straight. Going on with it in the run to the judge. Hathor won by a length from Partaga. who was a similar distance ahead of Popoff. Next in order came Kalos, Merle, Break o’ Day, Colarina, Mister Gamp and Henna.

The final day of the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was held in fine weather with a rather cold wind. The attendance was thirty thousand and the track was in good order.

In the first division of the Rous Handicap Reonui led the field till approaching the straight but then dropped back, leaving Herilda to win easily. White Fang was always handy in the second division and showed the way into the straight from Roi Syce, Bravado, Lausanne and Hoppicker. White Fang maintained the lead and stalled off a challenge by Giggle, who dashed up on the rails, by three-quar-ters of a lejigth. Rawhetu looked as if he were going to repeat Tuesday’s success in the Dangar Handicap. He lay second behind Dion early in the race, went to the front going along the back of the course and established a good lead. It was only after passing the leger post that Bacchus came up to beat him by three-quarters of a length. Battlement was always among the leaders but finished seventh. Only four horses faced the starter in the A.J.C. Plate. The race was another triumph for Limerick. Pantheon went to the front and set a slow pace, followed by Count Cavour and Limerick. This was the order till the entrance of the straight was reached, when Count Cavour dropped out and Limerick took the lead in a good finish to beat Pantheon by three-quarters of a length. RACING IN BRITAIN FIRST OF THE CLASSICS. THE TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS. LONDON, April 27. The Two Thousand Guineas, the first of the classics, run at Newmarket, resulted:—Adam’s Ajplc 1, Call Boy 2, Sickle 3. Twenty-three started. Won by a short head. SPEARFELT’S PRICE PASSED AT FIVE HUNDRED GUINEAS. Received April 28, 9.45 pjn. SYDNEY, April 28. Spearfclt was offered at auction and passed in at 500 guineas. ROYAL FEASI A YEARLING BARGAIN. RECORD TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER. Costing 700 gs. as a yearling, Royal Feast has won £12,873, which is a record for a two-year-old in Australia. The heavy going did not adversely affect Royal Feiast, who was the biggest youngster in the Sires Produce Stakes field, states “Pilot.” Always prominent, he was a < winner a furlong from home. On a line day, w’ith the going firm it is probable backers would have been asked to lay odds on Royal Feast for the Sire’s Produce Stakes. With the track soft, the books thought it worth while taking a little risk, and they Laid slight odds against him. He 1 is a big two-year old, and there was the chance that the heavy going, in conjunction with the fact that he was unaccustomed to racing right hand in, might disadvantage him. The Wensum wias next in demand, and then Tri valve, wlule of the Sydnev division, Laxly Dudley’s March received most support. Going on Melbourne form. I had an idea Trivalve was sirru to be more fancied than The Wensum, but evidently it was reckoned the going would not suit him. That idea was correct, too, as lie did not gallop nearly as well as tit Flemington. No Trouble to Win. A ioiian was the smartest beginner, but did not last long at the head of af t airs, giving place to The Wensum and I’aleta. At. the three furlongs the leaders were the same, while' Royal Feast though fifth, was not far lawav. The Wensum was first to turn for home. Prime Don, Green! ine 1 , and Royal Feast being nearest him. When fairly on the road home, McCarten shot Royal Feast through on the' rails, and the favourite had the race safe soon after commencing the lust furlong. Tins was his fourth win, and his total earnings were £12,273, beating the previous record for a two-year-old Heroic’s £11,826. His second in the Champagne Stakes added £6OO. Form Upset. It was a surprise to see Prince Don in second place, as he was meeting Black Duchess 131 b worse thUn when Hie latter beat him at Rosehill. This time Black Duchess was badly beaten. Greenline did better than in his recent races, which must have pleased Mr. Barnett, who was commencing to fear the gelding had gone to pieces. Greenwich tired after five furlongs, and Violain even sooner. Form did not point to Jocelyn being the best of the three fillies in the field, but she did better than either Black Duchess or Lady Dudley’s March. Her trainer has always looked to her to stay, and that opinion is evidently going to be correct. Although Royal Feast was not troubled by the going, it was not the same with another big colt, in Glen ar iff. lu one way the race went close to being a record —it was the slowest since Millieme took 1.32 J in 1915. Royal Feast only did three-quarters of a second better, the fastest for the race being Leslie Wallece’s 1.25}.

The victory registered by Royal Feast furnishes further evidence to establish that colt’s right to be accepted as the leading two-ydar-old performer of the season. The predominant note in the pedigree of this fine colt is the in-breeding to the Doncaster line through its most noteworthy channel (Bend Orj. The leading lines in his pedigree read as follows: Sire: King Of fa, by Radium (son of Bend Or and grandson of Doncaster), from Officious, by Isinglass (son of

Isonomy). Dajn: Bun feast, by Comus (son of Cyllene and grandson of Bonk Vista), from Child’s Party, by Childwick (son of St. Simon).
