THE PAPAITI BUS

VIEWS OF EDUCATION BOARD WANGANUI COUNTY’S ATTITUDE The establishment of a bus service from Papaiti to Aramoho for the school children of Papaiti district has roused a hornet’s nest between certain local bodies interested. The Wanganui Couny Council, last week, had a good deal to say on the matter and last night passing reference was made to it at the meeting of the Wanganui Educational Board. -I> : Mr W. 'A. Collins, chairman of the Education Board, stated to the Board last evening, after he had read a letter from the Upokongaro School Committee regarding the need for further accommodation ,that at its last meeting the Board had authorised a corporation conveyance to run children from Papaiti to Aramoho. The resolution seemed, however, to have stirred up a hornet’s nest and the Papaiti people, who in the first place had been in favour of the bus service, were now divided. Notice had been sent to the Wanganui County Council regarding the withdrawal of the ferry subsidy, and the Wanganui County Council had made some very adverse comment on the Beard’s decision. Statements had also been made re-

garding the state of the Upokongaro School. The speaker had- made an inspection of the school and had found the statements false. The building was certainly old, but it had years of service before it yet. The Papaiti people wanted a school which was an impossibility at present, hence the bus service. Mr H. Mclntyre expressed the opinion that it was a good thing the discussion had become public. He hoped that the Wanganui County Council in its zeal to help educational interest at Papaiti and Upokongaro, would nowbuild the bridge across the river at Upokongaro for which there had been a real necessity since the beginning of the century. It was resolved tn make application to the Department for a grant for additional accommodation at the Upokongaro School.
