A radio message reports that a severe earthquake was experienced at Osaka and Kobe, which was felt slightly at Tokio at 7.30 at night. The electricity at Osaka was cut off, throwing the city into darkness, but so far no serious damage has been reported. The population is terrified. Milder shocks are continuing. The first direct advices from the stricken region report terrible suffeip ing. Thousands are homeless, and spent the night in the fields among the snow and watched the burning towns and villages. The Kioto prefecture of police officially reports that 1230 are dead and 1000 injured. Five towns and several villages have been wholely destroyed, the fire taking what the earthquake left. The town of Minayama suffered worst with 1000 dead and 600 injured. Over 890 buildings collapsed during the two terrific shocks. The official report from Osaka gives the dead there at 840 and the injured 67. mostly in Sakae suburb. Tidal waves followed the ’quake and six passengers on the world cruiser California were seriously hurt. One woman was drowned and a member of the crew who leaped from the deck to her rescue was hurt.

Cables frem Tokio declare that a fire at Osaka, following the earthquake did widespread damage, but has now bee- broGght under control. Railways were crippled and telegraph wires brought down and several towns were badly shaken. Part of the city of Koteki with a population of 30,000 was a raging inferno owing to a fire after the quake. Seven girls were killed when a sptnning mill dormitory at Osako collapsed and 30 were injured. A later cable from Tokio states that a cinama hall collapsed as a result of the earthquake, and 80 people were pinned under the wreckage. Rescue work is proceeding.
