METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE ■ * EXTENSION OF ACTIVITIES The first step in the complete reorganisation of the New Zealand Meteorological office, which is being undertaken on the advice of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is indicated in an advertisement calling applications for the position of director of the office. The salary offered is £9OO per annum. It is understood that the reorganisation of the office involves a considerable extension of its activities and a considerable widening of its sphere of service. In addition to staff reorganisation, the meteorological office will be provided with much more up-to-date equipment and arrangements are being made to increase the number of stations, especially outside the Dominion, supply ing weather reports and other data Apart from the supplying of weathei forecasts for shipping and the farming community, the work of the meteorolo gieal office will be developed on lines that will greatly enhance its value to the Dominion and bring it into line with similar service in other countries. Much of the data collected by the office will be utilised in research work covering rainfalls, evaporation, etc., that will be, of great practical value in the working of the hydro-electric system of the Dominion as well as to the Department of Agriculture, farmers and fruitgrowers.
