FIGHTING FINS

PARLIAMENTARIAN’S SPORT INCIDENTS AT CAPE BRETT The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. 8. Williams, had a good time off Cape Brett recently, and helped to land a mako shark weighing 2301 b. Leaving Russell early in the morning, the Minister, his private secretary and two pressmen accompanying the Ministerial party tour of the North, proceeded by a special launch to the fishing grounds off Cape Brett, which were reached about 9 o 'clock. The weather was beautifully fine and the sea, which had been very rough for several days, was comparatively smooth, though towards the end of the day a heavy swell and choppy sea came up. The Minister witnessed the capture of the world’s record hammerhead, but its display was nothing to that of the mako shark, weighing 2301 b, caught by the Minister’s party. Immediately on arrival off Cape Brett lighthouse, two lines were cast, by the Minister and the special representative of the Auckland Star travelling with him, and within three-quarters of an hour the Star representative had hooked the only catch of the day. The fish was a beauty, and made four beautiful broaches, the first leap being estimated at fully ten feet out of the water, and the other three were almost as perfect. The Star representative then handed the line to the Hon. K. S. Williams, who played the great brute and fought him for over three-quarters of an hour. Immediately the big fish was landed the flag was hoisted at the masthead to signify that a catch had been made. A large number of people witnessed the fisherman’s return with the catch, which was weighed and recorded officially.
