LOCAL AGENTS’ ADVICE. Messrs C. F. Millward and Co. advise: — The Breeze is due back at Wanganui from Dunedin and the south on March 2. The Storm will reach Wanganui to-morrow from the south. From Dunedin and tht south, the Calm will arrive at Wanganui on Saturday. The Gale will arrive at Wanganui on February 28 from southern ports. The Gabriella will reach Wanganui probably to-morrow from Sydney and Newcastle. Messrs S. Holm and Co. advise: — The Holmdale will now reach Wanganui on Thursday from Dunedin, via ports. From Timaru. The Inaha is expected to reach Wanganui from Welington to-day. GENERAL NEWS. The Federal S.N. Company advise that the steamer Tasmania (which is loading in place of the damaged Northumberland) is expected to reach the Wanganui roadstead on Friday from Sydney. Newcastle, Brisbane, Port Chalmers and Picton. On completion of her operations here, the Tasmania (9008 tons) leaves for Napier and Wellington. She will leave the latter port finally for London,, Avonmouth, Glasgow. Liverpool (taking cargo for Manchester). Liverpool and Cardiff. Messrs Dalgety and Company announce that the Shaw, Savill and Albion freighter Matatua (8010 tons) will leave Wanganui probably to-morrow for Timaru and Wellington to complete her loading engagements for London. The Matatua came to this port from Newcastle and Napier.

ROYAL YACHT DISMANTLED. It is reported that another relic of the old regime has been annihilated by the Soviet authorities. The old Imperial yacht Livadja has been broken up. The yacht was built about 1880 for the Empress Marie Feodorovna. The vessel was built of a peculiar shape. She had a length of 200 ft, but in order te. reduce rolling, her beam was made as broad as 57%ft. The navigation of such a craft presented some difficulty. The Livadia has lain in Sevastopol Harbour for years, and her material when broken up is said to have realised £4,000.

UNUSUAL FERRY STEAMER. The double-ended twin-screw ferry steamer, Imbuhy, built to the account of the Companhia Contaeire a Viacao Fluminese, Rio de Janeiro, and which 5s intended for service between that port r | Nictheroy. was launched last month at . ’ ithampton. Designed to carry 1300 passengers, she has an overall length of 183 ft, a beam of 43ft, and a depth of lift 4in. The vessel is of the double-ended type, and is provided with four well-balanced spade rudders of special type, one beyond each propeller. There are three decks—main, upper (passenger), and shade decks—of which the first is arranged for disembarking passengers at either end. The propelling machinery consists of four sets of compound inverted direct-acting surface-condensing engines coupled together in pairs with two lines of shafting extending the whole length of the vessel. The indicated horse-power is SOO and the vessel is designed for a trial speed of 11% knots.

NEW STEAMERS BUILDING. The latest bulletin of the Department of Overseas Trade states that orders for three of the five 10,000-ton freighters which are to assist in maintaining the Canadian Pacific Railway Company’s London-Montreal service have been placed with Barclay, Curie and Co. (Ltd.) and William Denny and Bros. (Ltd.) on the Clyde, and Armstrong Whitworth, and Co. (Ltd.), and Wallsend-on-Tyne. The vessels are to be completed in a year. The Burntisland Shipbuilding Co. (Ltd.), secured an important contract for a special type of cargo steamer for Australian ownexp;. The propelling machinery, consisting of engines and boilers, will be supplied by David Rowan and Co. (Ltd.), Glasgow. J. I. Thornycroft and So. (Ltd.) have secured a contract to build four refrigerated steel lighters for the Union of South Africa. These lighters are to be 85ft overall, 20ft 6in beam, and Bft 6in depth, and will each have three insulated holds for the carriage of fruit and other fresh goods. The refrigerating machinery is being supplied by J. and E. Hall, of Dartford.
