Making her maiden voyage to Australia, the Roosevelt Line motor ship West Cusseta sailed from New York on January 26 for Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, and Adelaide* The vessel is scheduled to arrive at Sydney on March 5. BASS STRAIT LIGHTHOUSES. It is proposed states “The Harbour,” to connect the lighthouses at Cliffy Island and Dea! Bay, Bass Straits, witth the mainland by wireless telephony. A wireless telephone transmitter and receiver will be installed in each of these lighthouses, and a third unit will be provided at the lighthouse at Wilson’s Promontory, which also has a land line service. LAST OF EX-GERMAN STEAMERS. It is interesting to note that the steamer Carina, which has been sold by Messrs Turner, Davidson, and Co., Ltd., London, on behalf of the Australian Commonwealth Line of Steamers, to Greek owners, is the last of the ex-German vessels under this ownership. Together with the Austral boats, Messrs Turner, i Davidson, and Co., who are brokers for the ! Australian Commonwealth Line, have now disposed of some two dozen steamers for the line. GARTHPOOL SAILS AGAIN. j With her tall, raking masts towering above I everything else on the River Mersey, the I Garthpool, last of the British-owned fourj masted sailing ships, recently started from ! Liverpool on another long voyage to Australia, states an exchange. Built at Dundee thirtyfive years ago. this old wind-jammer, with her crew of thirty-one. is quite a stranger on the seas when everything is done by steam and oil. Fascinated crowds watched the tiny figures of the crew crawling along the yards ready for the order to make sail. BOILER STEEL. Some time ago a paragraph appeared in the foreign newspapers to the effect that Krupps had succeeded in producing a new mild steel for the manufacture of boilers which was capable of withstanding the heavy demand made upon boilers by modern processes without an increase in the thickness of the plate. The truth is, however, that a British firm—Messrs David Colville and Sons, of Motherwell—anticipated this German metallurgical advance by something like eighteen months. After exhaustive research and elaborate tests they submitted to the appropriate authorities in England a steel of much higher tensile and possessed of superior qualities, especially in respect of ductility, than had ever previously been used for boiiers.
