CYCLING

PROFESSIONAL CLUB SATURDAY’S SPORTS. Some interesting cycling took place at the farewell concert given by the Queen Alexandra Band at Cook’s Gardens on Saturday evening, the finishes being very close. R. White rode very consistently, timing his sprints very well. C. Jennings, a visitor from Palmerston North, annexed the two-mile event in good style. Unfortunately a spill occurred in this event, robbing the race of a lot of interest. The following are the results:— Half-mile. —First heat: R. White (scr.), 1; C. Jennings (15yds.), 2; R. Macey (35yds.), 3. Time, 1.6 1-5. Second heat: L. Moles 1, S. Berry 2, D. Davis 3. Time, 1.4. Final.—R. White 1, R. Davis 2, L. Moles 3. Time, 1.3. One Mile.—L. E. Smith 1, R. White 2, W. Taylor 3. Time, 2.11. Two Miles.—C. Jennings 1, R. White 2, W. Taylor 3- Time, 4.41. The front men wore bunched in a lap and were working well together till the third lap, when, on the mottom bejid, Loder struck Taylor’s wheel and came down, bringing down Smith and Stewart. Loder and Smith were b-uised and cut and Stewart sustained a broken collarbone. Boys ’ Race, 1 mile.—J. Sheehy 1, E. Longstaff 2, R. Styles 3. The musical chairs was won by W. Loder. This item caused a lot of amusement to the public. The boys’ sack race was another merrymaker, R. Baxter was first, G. Constantine second, and J. Whatnough third. Girls’ sack race—Miss Bishop 1, Miss Hodson 2. Boys’ 440yds.—R. Baxter 1, S. Tasker 2, R. Whatnough 3.

The club wish to thank the members of the St. John’s Ambulance for their work in rendering first aid to Stewart, Smith and Loder.

CHAMPIONS IN ACTION GROSE AND LAMB AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Feb. 19.' The appearance of R. W. Lamb (Victoria) and F. J. Grose (N.Z.) in the cycling events at the Otago centre’s sports to-day proved a good drtiw. Lamb won the half mile and three miles races with electrifying sprints. Grose rode well. A field of four in the half mile went away very leisurely and the race was called off *at the end of one round and sent away again. Grose looked a winner in the last lap, but a 50yds. sprint by Lamb put him a wheel ahead of the New Zealander. The time was 7.17. Lamb won his heat in the mile by 20yds. in 2min. 23 2-ssec. Nicholson was second. Grose ran second to D. Fraser in the other heat, which was run in 2.24. Fraser (170yds.) beat Lamb (scr.) and Grose (scr.) in the final, the time being 2min. 24 2-ssec.

In the three mile the result was: Lamb (scr.) 1, Grose (scr.) 2, Nicholson (70yds.) 3. The champions quickly picked up Nicholson and at the end of a. mile fell in behind the limit men. Lamb went away at the home turn in an excellent sprint and won by eight lengths in 7min. 41 2-ssec. Grose broke a pedal in the last Pap.
