Chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Queen Eleanor is due to sail from Eastern Canadian ports for New Zealand on March 25. The. tramp steamer Harmattan, which recently visited Auckland, has been chartered to load phosphates at Nauru Island about the end of this month for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. The Cunard liner Franconia, now on a world cruise, is due at Auckland on February 18, and at Wellington on February 23. The Franconia will then proceed to Milford Sound, where she will cruise for Milford Sound, where she will •cruise for some time before proceeding to Aus- ■ tralia. The following passengers for New Zealand arrived at Sydney last week by the Orient : liner Orvieto, from London:—Mrs. Akroyd, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. F. Clark, Mr. M. Clark and Miss D. Clark, Mr. F. N. Cowlin, Mr. and Mrs. D. O. Thornton, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Thornton. BRITAIN’S TRADE. An interesting return has been i issued by the ! Board of Trade relative to the distribution of I England's overseas trade during the twelve months ended with September last. This shows i that the total imports were valued at £1,221,1300,009, of which foreign countries contributed £870,703,000, the balance coming from the British Empire. With regard to exports, -the total value shipped was £654,737,000. the value going to Empire countries being £280,531,000. GERMAN SHIPPING PROGRESS. j Acording to the current edition of Lloyd’s Register, Germany is credited with owning a , total of 1,986 merchant vessels aggregating 3,111,000 tons. This is an increase, but not a very large one. over the total for the previous year. The pre-war German tonnage was over two and a-qnarter million tons more. During the trade depression it is hardly to be expected that any maritime country will show a big increase in its mercantile marine. Still, the fact • remains that during recent years Germany has made very tangible progress towards taking up that place in international shipping which she occupied before the war. THE KEILAWARRA DISASTER. December 9 was the fortieth anniversary of one of the greatest shipping disasters on the New South Wales coast. On the night of December 9, 1885, the steamer Helen Nicoll, owned by John See and Co., was on her way to Sydney from the Clarence River, running before a black north-easter. Suddenly, in a thick smoke, she collided with the Howard Smith steamer Keilawarra, bound from Sydney to Brisbane. So serious was the damage to the Keilawarra that she heeled over and sank in less than .five minutes, with the loss of about 36 lives. The Helen Nicoll, with her bow crushed in, remained afloat, and was conveyed into port. The two vessels were locked together for a little while after the collision, and several passengers from the Helen Nicoll jumped aboard the Keilawarra and went down with that vessel. The Helen Nicoll is still running on the coast. She is engaged in the Newcastle coal trade. VESSELS WltAin WIRELESS RANGE. Awarua—Tasmania, Waiotapu, N. T. Nilson Alonso, Sir James Clark Ross, C. A.
