UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

SCHOLARSHIP IN AGRICULTURE PROFESSOR’S GENEROUS OFFER. (Per Press Association.)' AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. Tho New Zealand University Council session opened this morning. Professor MacMillan Brown was appointed Chancellor for a three-years' term. He renewed his offer to give £2OOO for the foundation of a scholar- i ship in agriculture, made prior to the last Parliamentary session. He hoped the Council would accept it as a manifestation of his belief that the most important industry this country had to look after was that of agriculture. He made it a condition that the gift should bear a subsidy of pound for pound. The Wellington recess committee, reporting regarding the December entrance examinations, said: The committee feels that it is its duty to report to the Council the possible effect, of the application of the new system of lenient marking in any one subject, i There is clear evidence that the high ! marks awarded in one subject at the last examination have contributed materially towards the increased percentage of passes. Some safeguard appears to be necessary.” The clause was referred to a special committee. A summary of accounts for 1926 showed receipts totalling £35,346 16s 5d a»id payments of £32,989 17s Bd, leaving a surplus of £2346 8s 9d. The assets at the end of the year were: General account £6497 10s 9d, ordinary scholarship account £40,913 19s. Air F. Milner was appointed to represent the Council on the New Zealand Central Executive of the International Student Service during the absence of Dr. J. Hight from New Zealand.
