For indefinite years past there have been those who have regarded the marriage service of the Church of England as in need of revision. From recent cables it would seem that the bishops have joined the reforming movement. ’ That “the bishops have completely remodelled the marriage service” is the statement made by the Church of England official newspaper. If this is correct a new form of words, replacing that employed for centuries, will shortly be in use. “Whatever the Bishops decide will not necessarily be finial,” said Rev. P. A. Micklem. of St. James’s. Sydney, in reply to a question. He explained that, whatever changes were favoured oy the Bishops would be submitted to the National Assembly of the Church for its endorsement. After that the new form of words would go before the British Parliament. Everyone does not know that, before changes can be made in the Anglican prayer-book (in which the marriage service is incorporated), the new draft must lie on the table of the House of ! Commons for 30 dfcys. There is no debate in the House, and no alterations are possible. If no one objects, the new form, as drafted by the Bishop* and agreed to by the Church Assembly, becomes operative. “Assuming the facts are las stated,” said Mr Micklem, “and a remodelled marriage service has been drawn up by the Bishops we might have the service in Australia by the end of this yelar. ” A/nother fact was pointed out by Mr Micklem —that there is no question of making the new form compulsory. Those who prefer the old marriage service will not be debarred from it. The new one wil be “a voluntary alternative.’’ Other prominent clergymen who were - spoken to recently were disposed to agree that the wording of the marriage service could be altered with no detriment to the sanctity of marriage itself. The use of the word “obey” by the ’ wife, and the recital of the purposes of marriage were mentioned as main points of likely revision. Such phrases as “till death do us part” and “with all my worldly goods I thee endow” will have been countered by drastic changes in the civil law—changes that have allowed independent holding of property by either wife or husband, and have made dissolution of marriage possible during the lifetime of the parties. “We must recognise,” said one clergyman, “that the English Divorce Law of 1857 and the various Married 1 Women’s Property Acts since 1873 ® have revolutionised the position of 1 women in the marriage state. The pre- ( sent marriage service represents the 1 ecclesiastical view of pre-modern ' days. Ido not think we need be afraid of weakening the marriage tie if we recognise the position that the civil law has created.” 1 Pure Cane Sugar produces the best 1 vinegar.
